Why We’re Serious About Veterinary Pharmacy

Training in Nashville

Last month, our pharmacy team and I traveled to Nashville for a pharmacy conference. The agenda included a trade show, networking, and expert-led continuing education (CE). One session focused on something we care deeply about at Oswald’s: veterinary pharmacy. Vivien, our lead pharmacy technician, and I woke up early to attend, and it absolutely delivered.

Key Takeaways from the CE

The hour-long course was packed with practical guidance. The veterinary pharmacist explained how medication errors happen in animals, often because of knowledge gaps. We reviewed species-specific contraindications, unique dosage forms, and the differences between veterinary and human abbreviations. We also walked through must-have references for daily use. Most pharmacy schools don’t cover these details; however, we will still fill pet prescriptions. Therefore, we must seek out this training for our patients’ safety.

What It Looks Like in Practice

  • Back at the counter, this knowledge turns into consistent habits:
  • First, we confirm species and weight for accurate mg/kg dosing.
  • Then, we watch for abbreviation pitfalls like SID versus QD.
  • Next, we choose forms pets actually accept—flavored suspensions, chewable treats, or, when appropriate, transdermal gels.
  • Additionally, we stock pet-friendly flavors, label clearly for caregivers, and rely on trusted references like Plumb’s.
  • Finally, we coordinate closely with local veterinarians to clarify directions, adjust strengths, and meet turnaround needs.

A Personal Note

Throughout my career, I’ve owned and cared for dogs. My first three pups faced complex issues—glaucoma, kidney stones, encephalitis, epilepsy, and hemolytic anemia. So yes, I kept a little “doggie pharmacy” at home. Many of their medications matched what I dispense to human patients. The unfamiliar, veterinary-only options pushed me to learn more. Because of that, I completed a 22-hour online course in veterinary pharmacy this past year.
