While the retail pharmacy landscape continues to see independent locations shutter, we’re continuing to do everything we can to stay afloat and continue serving our wonderful community. As we’ve seen our customer base grow over the past year, I’d love to share a quick history of my family & Oswald’s past.
The pharmacy’s journey began with my great-great-great grandfather, William Wallace Wickel. The store opened in 1875, and he acquired ownership in 1881. Under his stewardship, the pharmacy became a cornerstone of Naperville, offering a diverse range of products from medicines to household items, reflecting the multifaceted role of pharmacies during that era.
In 1915, Wickel’s son-in-law, my great-great grandfather Louis Oswald, took ownership and navigated the business through significant societal changes, including Prohibition and the great depression. Anticipating community needs early on, he introduced a soda fountain in 1917, transforming the pharmacy into a social hub.
Louis Oswald’s son-in-law, my great-grandfather Harold Kester, assumed leadership in 1956. Recognizing the evolving retail landscape and the rise of chain drug stores, he expanded the store’s footprint and diversified our offerings, notably enhancing the cosmetics department to meet the changing preferences of the community.
In 1977, Kester’s son-in-law, my grandfather Robert Anderson, became the proprietor. He extended store hours and embraced technological advancements, making Oswald’s the first pharmacy in Naperville to implement computerized systems, thereby improving operational efficiency and customer service.
My dad, Bill Anderson, and his siblings took over the business in 1991. Under their guidance, Oswald’s adapted to market shifts by expanding our gift and toy selections. A significant milestone was the relocation to Naperville Plaza in 2004, positioning the pharmacy to better serve a growing customer base. By 2012, my father became the sole proprietor, continuing our family’s dedication to community-centered service.
In 2021, representing the sixth generation of my family to run Oswald’s, I assumed ownership. With a vision to blend tradition and innovation, I’ve focused on digital marketing and continued community engagement. I’m driven by the importance of family businesses in preserving personalized customer experiences amidst a landscape dominated by large chains. In 2023, I expanded Oswald’s reach by acquiring Riley’s Medical Equipment & Supplies in Geneva, extending our family’s legacy of care to neighboring communities.
I’m proud to see the family pharmacy represent the enduring value of locally owned businesses in fostering community ties, adapting through changing times, and providing consistent, personalized care. Something I think is lacking this day and age at larger stores, out of touch with their customer base. I’m so grateful for your support and hope to continue on our family’s tradition for another 150 years! ꝶ
