Pharmacist Blog: Gummy Bears for All?

Posted on: August 7th, 2024 by Oswald's Pharmacy Team

It is no secret in the pharmacy that I have terrible food habits. I am fairly certain I have survived on Crumbl cookies and Albanese gummy bears for the past year. This fact has caused both my weight and energy level to fluctuate much more than they should. As I am aging and trying to chase after 2 young children, I have found that my irregular food intake is not sustainable, and I need to make a significant change to my behavior. Before embarking on this journey, I wanted to understand why I am constantly hungry and rarely satiated by healthy foods when I attempt to improve my consumption.

What Makes Us Hungry?

What makes us hungry? When your stomach is empty, it produces and releases a hormone called ghrelin into the body. This “hunger hormone” is comparable to a toddler throwing a tantrum because it takes FIVE WHOLE MINUTES to prepare his peanut butter and jelly sandwich, and he wants it NOW! When in a fasted state or while losing weight, ghrelin spikes to get you to consume calories, and that spike can make you feel ravenous. Our fat cells produce another important food-related hormone called leptin. Leptin is the “sensible hormone” and signals our brain that we have had enough to eat. In people who are overweight or obese, the body can develop a resistance to leptin, so even though our fat cells are releasing leptin, the brain does not listen, and we continue to eat. These two hormones are see-sawing throughout the day to regulate our appetites and ensure our bodies are balanced and nourished.

In my case, ghrelin is yelling at me all day! My first problem is that I do not eat for prolonged periods causing ghrelin spikes which lead me to order Crumbl (they deliver so fast) or buy gummy bears to stuff in my mouth. These sugary treats spike my blood sugar and insulin release, which is proposed to be a cause of leptin resistance and why I rarely feel satiated by my poor food choices. Since this hormone dysregulation seems to be my main issue, I wanted to find a supplement that would help restore my balance of ghrelin and leptin while I adjust my diet.

Ortho Molecular HiPhenolic

I found that Ortho Molecular has a product called HiPhenolic to do just that. HiPhenolic contains a blend of polyphenols that support a healthy weight by increasing metabolic function and reducing cravings. I will also prepare as much food as possible to make those healthy food choices easier and faster. And I will be bringing those quick and nutritious snacks with me to work. I am counting on all of you to hold me accountable…The candy aisle at Oswald’s will miss me…
