With prescription reimbursements so low, and the costs of being an independent pharmacy in 2023 not getting any less expensive, we’ve put up a donation box to help offset our free delivery costs. You even get a Van Wyk chocolate bar for a donation of $1 or more! I appreciate all of our customers who have pitched in so far. Our delivery customers thank you!
Oswald’s Pharmacy Delivery History
In late February I received a new car topper (pictured above) for our prescription delivery car, usually driven by Willard. Let us know if you see the vehicle driving around town. Our two bigger vans for medical equipment deliveries have vehicle ‘wraps’. In my office at the pharmacy, I have a vehicle topper from the 1960s that features the old Rexall logo (pictured below).
In the 1970s my great-grandfather Harold Kester, the 3rd generation owner got a mortar-and-pestle vehicle topper! In the picture below, you can see my dad, 5th generation owner Bill Anderson, driving it in 1973.
Looking through old photos of our delivery fleet, the first cars that we had our logo on were in the mid-1950s. Before that, the town was so small most people didn’t require delivery, as they all lived so close to the pharmacy. Though we would still make deliveries in an emergency or to any of our older customers who weren’t able to make it in the store, usually in a personal vehicle.
Naperville History
My grandmother, Jean Anderson, remembers making a delivery to Caroline Martin Mitchel, with her grandfather, second-generation owner Louis Oswald. What’s unique about that memory, is Caroline was the last tenant of the Martin family living in the mansion at Naper Settlement! After Caroline’s passing in 1936, she donated the house and 212-acre estate it sat upon, to the city of Naperville. That donation, the largest ever given to the city, now includes Naperville Central High School, Naperville Garden Plots, Edward Hospital, Rotary Hill, and more! A generous donation that keeps on giving to this very day.
