Stringing Some Art Together with Ann Williams

Hey everyone! My fun-filled product review this month is the Craft-tastic String Art Kit. This fun and simplistic kit is manufactured by Ann Williams and comes with an assortment of options for crafters of all ages and skill levels. Options include 3D, Unicorn, and assorted shapes.

3D String Art Heart

The 3D option is a heart-shaped kit with a smaller heart shaped-hole in the center. This kit is great to use as a ‘frame,’ placing things like photographs in the smaller heart empty space looks great. The featured image for this blog shows my dog being framed by the 3D heart!

With the 3D kit, you must follow the directions when placing the plastic shell of the heart together. If you don’t follow the directions, the pegs won’t be facing the correct direction when you begin stringing the art together. When starting the 3D option, make sure you don’t pull the strings too taut; if you do you might find yourself starting from scratch. Not stringing your art too tight applies to all the String Art Kits—Very Important! Finishing the 3D kit, uninterrupted, took me about 35 minutes.

Unicorn String Art Kit

The Unicorn Kit consists of two flat string artboards. Board one has a heart shape on it and is not your standard crisscrossing string art pattern. The string pattern on board one is more of a starburst pattern.

The Unicorn itself is on board 2 and is more of a standard crisscrossing pattern.  Of all the string art kits, I found The Unicorn to be the most challenging.  The Unicorn’s difficulty is due to the tissue paper patterns.

To start the tissue paper boards, place the tissue paper patterns on the foam boards, then place the pins accordingly. Once the pins are in place, the paper must be torn away. If you’re like me and not always careful, you can easily pull the pins out of position! It’s smooth sailing after the paper tearing step.

Basic Shape String Art

Craft-tastic also offers many basic shape string art projects. The basic shape string art sets are more ‘standard’ string art projects. The shape string art sets can be completed fairly quickly by just following the included directions. The sky’s the limit with color choices though—choose your favorites!

The basic shapes are a great place for beginners to start. Put together a few basic shapes before moving on to the tough stuff.

Helpful String Art Tips

Helpful hint #1: I discovered that if you partially tie your knot, then place it over the pin, it was much easier than attempting to tie the knot on the pin. Make your knot loop, but don’t tighten it until it’s on the pin.

Helpful hint #2: While I was crafting I found that holding the board up off the table was very helpful. Holding the board up in the air allowed me to move the it where I needed it.  If holding the board up doesn’t sound good, or doesn’t work for you, I have one more solution.

Helpful hint #3: Wind the strings on the floss bobbins so that the extra string doesn’t get tangled around the pins as you work.
